Dumbo

Great to see Dumbo. Just great. She is wonderful.

Hi all thanks for coming to here.
Sorry no update, lately after the oral medicine finished, Dumbo not feeling well again.

It seems because of the wood shaving is so dusty even though a branded one. She was cough and sneezing occasionally and not active as well.

Immediately, i moved her and remove all the bedding instanly and found a fact, the bedding is so dusty. I hope she is not catch any kind of sickness again because isn't been awhile she got an antibiotic injection.

So i put an underpad and tissue bedding as temporary enclosure. After for awhile she looks get more better and better, just hear a bit sound from her occasionally (i dont know its kind of signal of her get annoyed or something else). After this, i will make sure to get rid the dust on wood shaving before use it.

Could you use a paper bedding? Kulfi has paper bedding and loves tunnelling into it to make a cosy den to sleep in!

Absolutely i would try it. However when i calculate the cost of bedding paper to reach the depth standart, its really cost a lot. Paper / tissue bedding not popular here, hopefully kaytee will expand in here 🥲.

I tried to made it by myself, but for now i can't because of workload increase.

Its concern me also, this summer get more longer than anticipated. I read an article said that paper and tissue bedding aren't good to let the heat out and will be damp. The temperature for this summer reach the peak on 34C.

Really sorry to hear Dumbo started sneezing again. She could actually be allergic to the wood bedding. Paper bedding is fine, even in hot weather and breathes well. It'll only be damp where she pees and that can be spot cleaned out. It is difficult when you can't find it easily.

Oh, I hope Dumbo gets better soon 🙏 IKEA sell air purifiers that take away dust from the air very efficiently. Vacuuming should also help.

Thanks all for the solution

@Maz : is it because of type of the wood that used for the bedding or all type of wood bedding will make the allergic come? I mean i used poplar wood shaving before, is it possible if the poplar wood that made her become allergic?

@Socks Mom : yeah i trully wanted to buy air purifier before, does it really working well? Because the dust is coming from the bedding not the room.

Im scale Dumbo today, her weight is gain a lot around 7 - 8 grams in this condition. The sneeze still coming out really ocassionally, does heat really possible to made her sneeze?

The air purifier sold by IKEA works well. There are some older models, but it is important to buy a modern one as they have advanced alot over there last few years. Don't get one that produces ozone as it could irritate your eyes. The problem is the dust in the bedding where she likes to tunnel, as you say, and dusting and using the air purifier won't clear the bedding. It is tricky. If you have a very old carpet, it might be worth having it steam cleaned. If the air in your room is very dry, you could try bringing in a pot of hot water to create steam to increase humidity. If the air is very humid, a dehumidifier might help.

for the humidity is already good, its around 40 - 55%, the temperature is like 34C the highest and 30 the lowest. I kindly observe her, it looks like the scent of my soap also made her sneeze, i realize this whenever i get my hand closer over her, she would sneeze. How do you guys testing the allergic on hamster? Is it only be done by vet? Or can we measure the allergic by ourselves?

What an adorable photo of her! She's gorgeous. They can be allergic to any type of wood, even hardwood, but not necessarily all woods. Although if an allergy is suspected to one type of wood it's probably best to use a hypoallergenic bedding like paper bedding, but I know that's hard for you to get hold of.

Air purifiers can make the air seem cleaner and fresher. Some people with asthma find the ones with hepa filters are helpful (they filter the most microscopic things in the air, including mould spores). But they also tend to be the most expensive and it might not make any difference if Dumbo is just allergic to her bedding.

Something like this one. But it sounds like you'll have enough expense with finding a bedding that suits her, and the replacement filters for these cost extra as well I think.

Hepa air purifier

It's odd she keeps having the odd sneeze. Some hamsters do have the odd sneeze occasionally, but if it's regularly it's usually either infection or allergy. She's just been treated for infection. Maybe just keep an eye on things for now. But I'd try and use hypoallergenic/paper bedding first and see if it improves. Carefresh can be quite dusty sometimes as well and some hamsters have had issues with that. It's wood pulp as opposed to just paper. I wish I could send you some paper bedding!

Thanks Maz, maybe i should took a video of her to make it clear. I got an appoiment to get allergic test for her later, the last breeder use wood bedding also and she looks so fine. I dont know either is it because of my handsoap's scent too strong, its because of her food or maybe because of the dust from her litter tray (Zeolite sand). I conclude that 3 kind of things that have been make her sneeze. I still ask the importer if they have an oxbow pure comfort to importing it here. It seems more cheaper than kaytee. I wanna ask, how much litre we need to fill 100 x 50 x 50 cm?

You could try removing the sand and see if that helps :-) Does she use it much? I don't think it's essential for Syrians to have a sand bath personally - some will use it, some won't.

I did this before and the effect not worn off yet. She look more cleaner than i though, the zeolite is her place to pee. She wouldn't pee on her bedding, when she need to do it she just move to the zeolite tray.

You could put something else in the litter tray :) She'll probably still use the litter tray once she's used to it. You could just put bedding in it although it might need emptying more often then. Or try a different type of sand? When you say an allergy test? I haven't heard of this before. Is a vet doing it and how do they test? Usually it's just process of elimination.

I have 2 types of sand, dessert sand and Zeolite. I will try, maybe putting tissue is more effective rather than sand?

Yes, the vet doing it. Im still collecting all kind of food and treats she have, also the bedding material as well. Still on checklisting one by one.

They use a bioresonance method to determine the allergy, i just need to send a bit of Dumbo's fur and all food and bedding she used. Does the vet in there doesn't have any allergy test ?

I've not heard of that before. It sounds quite alternative but interesting. You can put anything in a litter tray really - toilet paper, sand, bedding. Sand seems best for soaking up pee but trying without sand for a bit could see if it helps - but I think you said you'd already tried that. I would probably use the desert sand rather than zeolite as not heard of anyone having issues with that.

In fact a lot animal clinic in my city doesn't have allergy test, however my local forum said we can do the allergy test in animal clinic at capital city. So found that method used for alllergy test

Hi,
The odd sneeze is gone. I removed probably one or more lentil seeds from her seedmix, i think this is also the cause of her allergic and also i change my hand soap also which is have soft scent. Dumbo will move to her new enclosure in this week. She looks bored in this temporary cage.
